Choosing a Fungicide for Florida Lawn Disease: Contact vs. Systemic

Every turf fungicide falls into one of two mobility classes, and the difference decides how you use it.

Contact fungicides stay on the leaf surface and never enter the plant. They kill fungal spores that land on treated tissue before those spores can infect. Because they attack fungi at multiple sites at once, contact products carry a very low risk of resistance, but they wash off in rain, protect only the tissue they physically cover, and must be reapplied often. In a climate with near-daily summer storms, that is a real limitation.

Systemic fungicides move into the plant and redistribute through its tissue. That means they are rainfast within a few hours, need less perfect coverage, and hold protection for roughly 14 to 28 days. Some can suppress a fungus that has already infected, which contact products cannot do. The trade-off is that most systemics attack the fungus at a single biochemical site, which makes resistance far easier for the pathogen to develop.

For Tampa Bay’s wet, high-pressure conditions, systemic products do most of the heavy lifting. Contact fungicides earn their place as tank-mix partners, a point that matters for resistance and comes up again below.

Propiconazole vs. Heritage G: Two FRAC Groups, Two Jobs

The two products the disease-control shelf revolves around are not interchangeable. They belong to different FRAC groups, the numbering system the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee uses to sort active ingredients by mode of action.

Propiconazole 14.3 is a systemic DMI (demethylation inhibitor) triazole, classified as FRAC Group 3. It disrupts sterol production in fungal cell membranes and is the standard first choice for large patch and dollar spot, the two diseases that dominate Central Florida’s cooler, dewy months.

Heritage G is granular azoxystrobin, a systemic strobilurin (QoI) in FRAC Group 11. It blocks fungal respiration and delivers up to 28 days of residual protection, which makes it well-suited to gray leaf spot during the hot, humid summer. Its granular form needs light irrigation or dew to activate and move into the root zone.

Here is the part that separates a knowledgeable application from a guess: azoxystrobin used alone against dollar spot in heat has been documented to advance the disease rather than stop it. Group 11 is also a single-site chemistry, and its history in turf is a warning. When strobilurins were leaned on too hard against gray leaf spot on golf-course ryegrass around 2000, full field resistance appeared from a single mutation in the fungus’s cytochrome b gene. Powerful chemistry, used carelessly, taught the fungus to ignore it.

Application Rates and Timing That Actually Work

Rates below reflect current 2026 product labels. Always confirm against the label on the container you buy, because it is the legal instruction and it changes.

For liquid propiconazole 14.3, the label range runs about 1 to 2 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet, mixed into enough water for even coverage, with the higher end reserved for heavy disease pressure. For granular Heritage G, apply 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet on a 10 to 28 day interval, starting at the low rate under moderate pressure and moving up when disease is active.

Timing matters as much as rate in Florida:

  • Spray liquids in the early morning so the product dries and moves into the plant before afternoon storms arrive.
  • Apply granules ahead of a light rain or dew that will wash them into the root zone, but not before a heavy downpour that would move them off target.
  • Treat preventively where you can. Both chemistries perform meaningfully better applied before symptoms than as a rescue after patches appear.

Rotate FRAC Groups to Prevent Resistance

Rotation is the single practice that keeps these products working, and it is simple: do not use the same FRAC group twice in a row against the same disease. Alternate propiconazole (Group 3) and azoxystrobin (Group 11) between application cycles so no single mode of action faces sustained selection pressure.

The two groups do not develop resistance at the same speed, which is exactly why they pair well. Resistance to DMI fungicides like propiconazole tends to build gradually over ten or more years, while as few as four or five back-to-back applications of a single-site product can breed resistance. Because Group 11 is the fragile one, university guidance is to tank-mix high-risk single-site fungicides with a low-risk, multi-site contact partner rather than run them solo. That is where the contact products from the first section come back in: not as your main tool, but as insurance for your systemic.

Be Skeptical of the “One Bottle Cures Everything” Shelf

A lot of retail marketing pushes a single all-in-one “lawn fungus cure” as if fungicide selection were a non-decision. Treat that framing with the same caution you would give a warranty promise. A product that claims to handle every disease usually does none of them precisely, encourages spraying without diagnosis, and, if it leans on one active ingredient, is the fastest route to the resistance problem this whole guide is built to avoid. The honest version of fungicide advice is less convenient: identify the pathogen, match the chemistry, apply at label rate, and rotate. There is no bottle that removes those steps.

Year-Round Reality in Zone 9b to 10a
